THE MENTOR WALKTHROUGH · SIX STEPS

Support the thinking.

Move at your own pace. Open the relevant app screen when you are ready. These guides contain no learner records.

STEP 1 OF 6

Start with your assigned learners.

Your workspace connects you with the people you are authorized to support.

  1. Sign in with your verified mentor account and open “My learners.”
  2. Check the learner list. If someone is missing, contact program coordination; do not ask the learner to send private material outside the assigned workspace.
  3. Use “Needs reply” for outstanding conversations and “All submissions” to revisit earlier exchanges. Filter by learner when useful.
What you should see

You see work from assigned learners. No assignments means an empty inbox, rather than access to all program participants.

Keep in mind

Access ends when an assignment is removed. Five active learners per mentor is the program capacity limit; arrange coverage with coordination before capacity becomes a problem.

STEP 2 / MENTOR

Understand their starting point.

Read the learner’s shared context before offering direction.

  1. Open a weekly program exchange from your review inbox.
  2. Read the shared priorities, starting point, intended progress, practice setting, support notes, and responses for both development areas.
  3. Notice whether the learner is describing workplace experience or a thought experiment. Ask for clarification where needed.
What you should see

You can connect your response to the learner’s chosen priorities. A shared snapshot is the context they chose to send, not access to every private draft.

Keep in mind

You cannot see an unshared learning-focus draft. Do not infer missing information or ask for confidential workplace details.

STEP 3 / MENTOR

Share a useful perspective.

Bring a relevant brief into the conversation with a reason for reading it.

  1. Find “Culinary Radar · Program briefs” in your workspace. Choose a development area and open “Preview this brief.”
  2. Select an assigned learner and add a note under “Why this may help.”
  3. Choose “Share brief with learner.” Check the confirmation; the brief and note appear in the corresponding weekly conversation.
What you should see

Your learner receives a specific resource linked to the question they are exploring. You can also use the existing Radar sharing controls for additional reading.

Keep in mind

Sharing a resource does not count as responding to an outstanding feedback request. Program briefs are learning commentary with source limitations, not evidence of program effectiveness.

STEP 4 / MENTOR

Respond with substance.

A useful response helps the learner examine their thinking and choose a next step.

  1. Open a request that needs a reply and check its response due time. The 12-hour period includes weekends.
  2. Refer to something specific in their reasoning, ask an open question, and suggest a manageable next step. Read the sample exchange below for a calibration example.
  3. Choose “Type instead” to write and save your contribution, or use the microphone for a voice contribution. Reopen the conversation to confirm it appears.
What you should see

Your response is recorded in the conversation. Continue with follow-up questions as useful. Keep an eye on actual reading, preparation, call, and feedback time.

Keep in mind

Program conversations do not automatically go to Cheffy. If you cannot meet the commitment, contact coordination to arrange coverage. Voice contributions are saved with their transcripts.

STEP 5 / MENTOR

Separate conversation from evaluation.

Your final summary describes evidence and its limits.

  1. Choose “Mentor evaluation summary” from your workspace. In the reflection page, select “Mentor summary” and the correct learner.
  2. Distinguish directly observed evidence, learner-reported experience, your interpretation, and areas not observed. Save your private draft.
  3. Review before submitting. Remove private conversation details and identifying workplace information; confirm and choose “Submit mentor evaluation summary.”
What you should see

Your summary goes to the coordinator for evaluation. The board receives only a reviewed, de-identified version. Your saved submission is in My account → Submissions.

Keep in mind

The learner does not receive your mentor summary through this flow. Their completion does not depend on your summary or approval of their conclusions.

STEP 6 / MENTOR

Close with a next step.

Help your learner carry their thinking beyond the four weeks.

  1. Invite the learner to compare their current thinking with their starting point. Ask what changed, what remains uncertain, and what they want to try next.
  2. Gather feedback on clarity, involvement, access needs, and the effects of the experience. Keep claims tied to what you observed or the learner reported.
  3. Raise coverage, access, or workload needs with coordination. For independent concerns, use gethelp@firstandfork.org;
What you should see

The learner leaves with a practical next step and room for an honest account of their experience.

Keep in mind

A closing conversation is part of the planned experience, but it is not an extra completion requirement. Optional surveys and follow-ups do not affect completion.

WEEK 1 · COMMUNICATION + FEEDBACK

A handoff keeps going wrong.

A teammate says they understand a revised handoff, but the next shift still receives incomplete information.

Sample learner response“I would remind them of the process and ask them to follow it next time.”
